Dear Mercure Hotels Team,

I am writing to raise a serious welfare concern regarding the state of bird-deterrent netting at the Mercure Nottingham City Centre Hotel - 2 George Street, Lace Market, Nottingham NG1 3BP.

Several dead pigeons can be seen decomposing in netting in the courtyard area with others seen trapped below the netting.

Not only is the netting clearly failing in its intended function, but it is now actively causing harm. Birds becoming trapped in this type of netting can suffer for days while attempting to escape, often sustaining catastrophic injuries in the process and ultimately dying slow and painful deaths. This is neither humane nor acceptable. Given the severity of the situation, I strongly urge you to remove this netting as a priority.

Furthermore, as you may be aware, pigeons are protected under UK law. If a trapped bird isn’t rescued promptly, the incident becomes a wildlife crime under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, section 4 causing unnecessary suffering.

Now that the issue has been brought to your attention, I trust the you will take swift and compassionate action to address it. If no steps are taken, further incidents may not only result in more animal deaths but also potentially breach wildlife protection laws.

I urge you to treat this situation with the seriousness it deserves and to ensure that no other animal is left to suffer in this way again.

Kind regards,
